如何称呼英国UK or GB？

有谁知道 ’United Kingdom’ , ‘Great Britain’, 和’The British Isles’的区别？

起码我来英国后才知道。

简单的说，把它们按领土从小到大排序：

• Great Britain = England + Scotland + Wales
• United Kingdom = Great Britain + North Ireland
• The British Isles = United Kingdom + Ireland + the Isle of Man (sometimes + the Channel Islands)

世上没有一样东西叫’British Law’，因为North Ireland和Scotland有全制定自己的法律。然而，按照国际法，UK要对一些其他地区负责，比如the Channel Islands 和the Isle of Man。英女王是他们的最高统治者，但他们不属于英国。

有一个问题困惑了很多英国人：

为什么参加北京奥运会的英国队叫Team GB，却包含North Ireland运动员？

答案各种各样，有些牵涉到政治。最后ABC的弟弟出来解释：
According to the International Olympic Committee’s existing charter, the Olympic Council of Ireland represents the whole island of Ireland.
However, Northern Ireland athletes have always been able to compete for GB.
But now the British Olympic Association has included Northern Ireland in its new Olympic contract to be signed for the 2004 Athens Games.

英国朋友问了我一个显而易见，却又被我忽视的问题：

The Royal Liver Building – 上海海关大楼原型

BBC一档关于英国海岸线的系列节目(Coast)中一集来到港口城市Liverpool, 介绍其标志性建筑The Royal Liver Building闻名世界时，特别提到上海有一栋建筑是受此启发仿建。上网google & Wiki一下，原来是海关大楼。

Wikipedia: Liver Building  (pronounced /ˈlaɪvər/ 不然名字也太怪了) is a Grade I listed building located in Liverpool, England.

Q: 什么是Grade I listed building?
A: Buildings of outstanding architectural or historic interest

落成于1911年，是世界上最早的用强化混凝土建造的建筑之一，高90米，1965年之前，一直是Liverpool最高的建筑。顶端是两个钟楼，给过往船只查看时间。钟面直径7.6米，大过London Big Ben。原名为乔治钟，因为乔治5世于1911年6月22号加冕。

在每个钟楼顶上各有一只Liver Bird。最广泛的传说是，一只注视城市保护居民，另一只面向大海眺望即将到来的船员。另一种传说是，如果其中一只Liver Bird飞走，利物浦将不复存在。所以Liver Birds都是被铁链拴在顶上的。

上海海关大楼落成于1927年。东楼高90米（11层），顶上有钟楼，面向黄埔江。西楼有5层，面向内陆。钟楼上四面都有钟面，直径均为5.3米，是亚洲记录保持者。机械装置根据Big Ben设计在英国制造，而后运到上海。

两栋建筑的地理位置，作用和外观，特别是上半部分，都十分相象。外滩其他建筑是不是都有原型呢？

修女也疯狂音乐剧

自从在Royal Variaty Performance上看过片段就喜欢上了这部音乐剧。乘着去London的机会就买了两张最便宜的票，2楼倒数第二排。那天上座率应该有90%左右。

根据电影改编而来，其实没看全过这部电影。电影女主角Whoopi Goldberg作为制作人之一，把这部走红影片搬上伦敦西区(West End)音乐剧舞台。2009年6月2日在London Palladium首演，周一到周六每天演1-2场。演员不变，地点不变，有个大大的问号：演员生病怎么办？

舞台设计超级棒，被震撼到。所有场景变换，都在瞬间完成，没有关灯与闭幕的过程。细节上做的太完美了。
